One local shopping mall decided it was a good idea to offer a special discount event called “Mother’s Day Night Out” in honor of Mother’s Day. O.K., sounds like a good idea, right? Well, the “night out” was between 4 pm and 7 pm. Here are some of the moms’ responses. Are you listening marketing department? BTW, when did you want your orthodontic appointment?
Margo T. thought the event sounded nice.
“Would love to attend the 4-7 p.m. soiree!” she said yesterday. “Hopefully I can squeeze it in between dance class dropoff/pickup, clarinet lesson, whipping dinner together for family, and my race to nowhere!”
Traci C., a mom of two athletic girls in fourth and fifth grades, thought redesigning the mall for moms would be helpful in attracting a crowd.
“If the mall would put a sports field inside so that I could watch my kids’ games and have a mom’s afternoon, that would solve all my problems,” said Traci. “I think most of us live at the Sports Park this time of year!”
Denise E., took the idea a step further:
“If the 4-7 p.m. timeframe could actually work, someone could provide fun, clean, safe (and free) babysitting services for all participating moms,” she said. “A mani/pedi social would also be fun with cocktails and snacks provided.”
Beth B., explained in a hastily written email:
“I already have to take my daughter to lacrosse 20 minutes early due to her sister’s orthodontist appointment at 4:45, then hurry from the orthodontist so we can get to swimming by 5, because I volunteered to coach from 5 to 6. My son needs picking up from high school swim practice at 5:40. Guess he’ll have to wait. But I can’t be late picking up lacrosse at 6:30 because I’m the party coordinator and need to get RSVPs. Hmm…what’s for dinner?”
Sabina C. suggested boosting the fun-factor, saying that perhaps the night would be more intriguing if it included cocktails (“with a casino-style server coming up to me asking what I would like”) and a personal shopper “who can find the perfect jeans for me without me trying them on!”
We think being a mom is the hardest job in the world. At Coolsmiles Orthodontics, we try to schedule 90% of your child’s visits after school, but we realize you have many other activities as well. Hats off to our moms, we love you!
